Neck Pain Sources

A pain in the neck can come from many sources, the most common are:

  • Sprains and strains of ligaments, tendons and muscles
  • Restrictions in movement of the neck joints. Often called ‘a crick in the neck’ can be caused by poor posture, falling asleep with the head to one side,  picking up and carrying something heavy on one side or maybe a jolt to the neck from a trip or other sudden movement.
  • Tight muscles which have knots (trigger points) in them can often refer pain into the side or back of the neck
  • Wry neck, also called torticollis is where the neck can become ‘stuck’ often after a sudden movement, although it can also come on overnight
  • Spondylosis, which is a degeneration of the bones and discs in the neck
  • Occasionally discs in the neck can bulge or prolapse, similar to a disc injury in the lumbar spine.

A careful evaluation of the history, followed by thorough examination which may involve testing nerves should help to pinpoint the cause of the problem which can be treated by…

  • Manual Adjustments,
  • Muscle Work,
  • Targeted Stretching
  • Lifestyle advice to avoid recurrence
