Hip & Buttock Pain, Causes And Treatments

The commonest cause of pain in the hips and buttocks is pain which originates in the lower lumbar spine and the sacroiliac joints which are where the spine joins the pelvis, but is frequently felt in the outer buttock and the back of the hip.

Other causes of pain in this area can be::

  • Arthritis of the hip joint, frequently felt in the groin area
  • Hernia, when the abdominal wall becomes weak
  • Bursitis, A fluid filled sac called a bursa, that cushions the movement of ligaments over bones can become inflamed, you tend to feel these over the widest point of the hip or under the seat bones.
  • Coccydynia, this is where the the tail bone at the end of your spine becomes sore or displaced, often resulting from a fall onto your bottom
  • Tendinopathy, this is damage to the tendons, sometimes from a sudden stretch (tendinitis) or by wear and tear due to overuse (tendinosis)

The pelvis is a complicated structure as it is here that the forces travelling through the body change direction from the spine to the legs.  The specific treatment plan will depend on the underlying cause of the pain, which may include conditions such as piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or a herniated disc.

There are many muscles here as well as the hip joints. We can help locate the source of the pain and work with you through adjustments to the joints and rehabilitation stretches and exercises.
