Types Of Elbow Pain

The elbow is more complicated than a simple hinge. You may have clicking, locking, weakness and pain in the elbow. Common causes are

  • Tennis elbow, rarely caused by playing tennis. It is pain or tenderness on the thumb side of the elbow, which is dull and achy. It often comes on without any apparent sudden injury.
  • Golfers elbow is similar but on the little finger side of the elbow.
  • Tendonitis. This often occurs as a sports injury involving repeatedly flexing the elbow, such as bowling, weightlifting or gymnastics.
  • Bursitis, where the fluid filled sac which cushions the point of the elbow becomes injured by banging the elbow, or sometimes by friction.
  • A trapped nerve can cause pain and tenderness either just above the elbow or in the forearm with clumsiness or weakness in the hand, or the ‘hit my funny bone’ type of pain, usually caused by an injury to the muscles that the nerve passes through.

Treatments for elbow pain can be a bit uncomfortable but are usually very effective.
