Upper Back Pain Info

Pain in the upper back, chest and rib area or pain between the shoulder blades can be worrying as it is the part of your body which houses your heart and lungs but more often than not it is likely that pain in this area is of a mechanical origin. Some of the conditions that affect this area are:

  • Costochondritis which is an inflammation of the rib cartilage, usually where it attaches to the breastbone (sternum)
  • Scoliosis, where the spine curves sideways rather than front to back.
  • Osteoporosis
  • Facet syndrome, when the joints between the individual vertebrae do not move correctly, similarly sometimes the joints between the spine and the ribs can sometimes not work properly, usually after heavy lifting or sometimes from sneezing, coughing or even laughing very hard.
  • Intercostal muscle strain – the muscles between the ribs can be pulled often following a chest infection involving bouts of coughing or sneezing.

If you have upper back pain pain we can check your heart, lungs and blood pressure and if we think it necessary we will refer you on to your GP.
